Reducing Your Disk Usage

Clovux offers unmetered SSD disk space to it's Minecraft hosting clients, however in order to keep things fair, we do not allow excessively large files to be stored on our servers. This include backups, logs, unrelated files (such as videos, images etc) or any other file(s) we deem to be unrelated or excessively large. We kindly ask that you keep this in mind while hosting with us to avoid unnecessary warnings.

We have put together some simple steps you can take to reduce your server's disk usage.

Logs
Log files can take up a huge amount of disk space. We would advise deleting your /logs folder routinely as they are not deleted automatically.
Servers with buggy/outdated plugins can spew out hundreds of lines of console output per second which can amount to large disk usage. We would recommend keeping your plugins up-to-date and using the correct version for the server version you are running. Spending some time fixing console spam can be very beneficial not only by reducing disk space but it can also improve performance and make console output easier to read. Sometimes you may have debug output which is difficult to remove and in this case you can use a plugin such as Console Spam Fix to mute its console output.

DynMap
If you are using DynMap, please be aware its default configuration causes very high disk usage and we've noticed most servers violating our fair usage policy on disk usage are running DynMap.
With a simple tweak its disk usage can be cut massively:
1. Log into your server's FTP using an FTP client such as FileZilla and browse to /plugins/dynmap
2. Open configuration.txt and use the Find function in your text editor to find image-format
3. Change the image-format from png to jpg
4. Delete the folder inside /plugins/dynmap/web/tiles/ (such as world, world_nether, world_the_end etc)
5. Regenerate the DynMap worlds from in-game.

Backups
Another leading cause of high disk usage on servers is backups. Some modpacks include a backup plugin and this often leads to high disk usage.
Clovux backs up all Minecraft servers daily to a remote location and these are stored for 7 days. These can be restored by simply opening a ticket specifying the date required for the backup.
Clients may keep their own backups, however they should not store them on the server, they should be stored offsite. There are some automated solutions already available for this.

Unrelated Content
Only content related to running your Minecraft server should be stored on Clovux servers. Clovux offers free web hosting for its Minecraft hosting customers which can be availed of and any files such as videos, images, documents etc may be stored there.

These are some guidelines to help you reduce your server's disk usage. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact our support team who will gladly assist you.
